Job Description

Intermountain Health is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Registered Nurse Forensic Nurse Examiner to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department within our Healthcare & Medical industry setting. As a not-for-profit, Utah-based health system renowned for high-quality healthcare and innovative medical services, Intermountain Health is committed to serving the community through hospitals and clinics where patient safety, dignity, and satisfaction come first.

In this role, you will provide specialized forensic nursing care to patients who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, human trafficking, or other forms of trauma. Drawing on your clinical expertise and forensic training, you will conduct comprehensive medical-forensic assessments and examinations, collect and preserve evidentiary samples, document findings with precision, and provide trauma-informed support for patients and their families during highly sensitive and stressful situations.

You will perform detailed physical and forensic exams, including sexual assault examinations, injury assessments, photography of injuries, and evidence collection in accordance with established protocols and legal requirements. Maintaining the integrity of the chain-of-custody will be essential, as your meticulous documentation, specimen handling, and collaboration with law enforcement and legal professionals may contribute directly to criminal investigations and court proceedings. You will complete accurate and timely electronic documentation, create thorough medical-forensic reports, and may be called upon to testify in court as a fact or expert witness regarding your findings and care.

Working within Intermountain Health’s culture of excellence, compassion, and integrity, you will practice trauma-informed, patient-centered care, ensuring privacy, informed consent, and culturally sensitive communication with patients of diverse backgrounds, ages, and gender identities. You will provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and education on follow-up medical care, safety planning, and available community resources, while respecting each patient’s choices and autonomy.

As part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, you will partner closely with emergency department staff, physicians, social workers, victim advocates, law enforcement officers, and other community agencies. You will assist in developing and refining forensic nursing protocols, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and participate in case reviews to ensure best practices in both clinical outcomes and forensic integrity. You will engage in ongoing education to stay current with evolving standards in forensic nursing, evidence collection, legal requirements, and trauma-informed practices.

Intermountain Health offers a supportive, innovative environment where nurses are encouraged to grow professionally and contribute to cutting-edge healthcare solutions. In this position, you can expect opportunities for continuing education in forensic nursing, mentorship, participation in community outreach and education related to violence prevention and victim services, and involvement in research or quality projects that advance the field. You may also assist in providing training and education to other clinical staff, law enforcement, and community partners on forensic nursing practices, recognizing signs of abuse, and appropriate response pathways.

This role requires strong clinical assessment skills, exceptional attention to detail, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm and objective in high-stress, emotionally charged situations. The ideal candidate will be committed to upholding high standards of ethical and legal practice, maintaining patient confidentiality, and aligning with Intermountain Health’s mission of community-oriented care and continuous improvement. If you are a registered nurse who is passionate about caring for vulnerable patients while contributing meaningfully to the justice system and community safety, this Forensic Nurse Examiner opportunity at Intermountain Health offers a rewarding and impactful career path.
