World History Teacher Job Description:

Job Summary:

Edison High School is dedicated to serving students with learning differences in small classes (average of 10 students). Teachers cultivate a safe and community-based learning environment. This full-time position is responsible for teaching four World History classes per year, as well as one elective course per term, and acting as an advisor for a group of students (a mixed group of 10-12 students from grades 9-12).  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach five classes as assigned, using a variety of teaching methods to support different learning styles, abilities, and identities.
  • Lead an advisory/homeroom to support students with organization, self-advocacy, and social skill development. 
  • Facilitate (8th period) homework support session four days a week.
  • Collaborate with the Social Studies Department on curriculum development and reform.
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings, department meetings, and two all-school professional development events.
  • Other tasks and/or duties (e.g., attend the school’s auction and open house; chaperone a dance; coordinate family and student conferences; etc.) as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies as they pertain to teaching history and social studies to high school students with learning differences.
  • Educational trends and best practices for curriculum development and instructional strategies for high school history and social studies programming.
  • Academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of high school students.
  • Effective classroom management techniques.

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, develop, and effectively deliver a comprehensive history and social studies curriculum. 
  • Construct an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom that provides an effective and stimulating learning experience for students with learning differences. 
  • Effectively assess the educational needs of each student, and utilize innovative strategies to enhance student success.
  • Review, analyze, evaluate, and communicate students’ academic, social, and emotional growth with school counselors and students’ families. 
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues using clear and open communication. 
  • Thrive in a tight-knit community while working with students, families, and staff with diverse ethnicities, racial identities, sexual orientations, gender expression, religions, ages, and abilities.
  • Demonstrate an optimistic attitude, resiliency, and a dedication to personal and professional growth.

Certificates and Clearances:

  • A valid secondary teaching license from any state in the United States is preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR Certificate (can be acquired prior to the beginning of employment).
  • Criminal justice fingerprint and background clearance.

Reporting:

This position reports to the Principal of Edison High School.

Salary/Benefits/Start Date:

  • Competitive salary with full benefits. Salary based on degree (s) and years of experience.
  • Salary Range: $44,312 - $76,448.
  • Insurance benefits include: Health and dental, Health Savings, and Flexible Spending.
  • Retirement: 6% employer contribution to 401K account.
  • Generous sick leave and personal time-off benefits.
  • Start date: August 25, 2026. This is a 10-month position for the 2026-2027 school year.
