Position Overview

The Staging Carpenter is responsible for maintaining and refinishing rental stage platforms and supporting scenic carpentry projects. This role involves replacing plywood, repairing blemishes, sanding, applying finishes, and working with carpet, adhesives, and fabrics to create professional surfaces. The position requires proficiency with hand and power tools, collaboration with the Carpentry Supervisor and team, adherence to safety standards, and delivering high-quality results on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refinish rental stage platforms by replacing plywood, filling blemishes, sanding smooth, and applying a high-quality finish.
  • Perform standard carpentry duties with a focus on theatrical carpentry techniques.
  • Collaborate with the Carpentry Supervisor to prioritize platform refinishing tasks.
  • Build, modify, and join materials, according to specifications using nails, glue, adhesives, screws and staples, hammer, miter saw, levels, rulers, & framing squares for various carpentry projects.
  • Work with carpet and glues to create finished surfaces on rental platforms.
  • Wrap flats with fabric and contribute to the construction of stage sets as needed.
  • Use hand and power tools to cut, shape, and assemble materials for carpentry and refinishing projects.
  • Work with other carpenters to complete large-scale projects efficiently and meet project deadlines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, storing tools and materials appropriately.
  • Inspect finished platforms and theatrical elements for quality, making any necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing carpentry tasks.
  • Any other action deemed reasonable or significant by management.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Carpenter, with expertise in theatrical carpentry techniques.
  • Knowledge of platform refinishing techniques, including plywood replacement, filling, sanding, and painting.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of wood tools, including saws, routers, and drills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to perform carpentry tasks and work with heavy materials.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and supervisors.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, depending on project requirements.
  • Familiarity with using a tape measure accurately.
  • Commitment to safety practices in a construction environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50-75 lbs. independently and heavier loads with team assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, and reach regularly throughout the workday.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to safely operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work on platforms, scaffolding, and lifts, while adhering to fall-protection.
  • Stamina to perform physical tasks for extended periods, often in fast-paced or time-sensitive environments.
  • Ability to work in varied conditions, including indoor warehouse environments and outdoor job sites, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to wear and properly use all required PPE (personal protective equipment), including safety harnesses, helmets, and gloves.
  • Keep staging equipment organized, clean and stored in the proper designated areas.

Working Conditions

This position is performed in a warehouse environment with seasonal temperature fluctuations, frequent exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment. Shift schedules may include early mornings, late evenings, or weekends depending on business needs.
